Why Is Faith Important? (Part Two)

Faith not only ignites a rich and intimate relationship with God, but also provides us our main line of defense against our enemies. Now, I want to make it clear that people are not our enemies. As Christians, we are called to love God and love people. As stated in Ephesians 6:12,

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

That being said, the devil can and does influence and manipulate people to a) keep them in bondage, and b) destroy the people of God. A prime example is found in the book of Daniel in the sixth chapter.

Although the Israelites were under the rule of the Babylonian kingdom, Daniel found favor with the king and rose to the top utilizing God-given wisdom and supernatural understanding. In an attempt to destroy Daniel, the government officials working beneath him devised a plot to have him killed. Because they could not find any ground of accusation against Daniel regarding government affairs, they knew the only way to bring him down was to find charges against him concerning his worship of God. Therefore, they enacted an unjust law—that anyone who makes a petition to any god or man aside from the king for thirty days, should be cast into the lions’ den. Notice Daniel’s response:

“Now when Daniel knew that the document was signed, he entered his house (now in his roof chamber he had windows open toward Jerusalem); and he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, [h]as he had been doing previously.”

Look at this man of great faith! Notice Daniel went straight to God in prayer, giving thanks to the Lord. He did not grumble or complain about the unjust law, but rather he appealed to the supreme Sovereign, the Most High God who reigns from Heaven above.

Also, Daniel was not ashamed or afraid to pray openly. He did not close his windows or change his posture of prostration. We simply must not allow the schemes of the enemy to interrupt our daily rhythm of prayer and petition to God. If Daniel would have stopped praying, he would have been disconnected from the power of God to deliver him from that situation. People who remain firm in their faith will not waver or even hesitate in their obedience and relationship with God because they know the nature of God. God will never leave us nor forsake us; He makes a way where there is no way. He is worthy of our trust and complete reliance.

Let’s see how this incredible story unfolds:

The conspirators came and found him praying, asking God for help. They went straight to the king and reminded him of the royal decree that he had signed. "Did you not," they said, "sign a decree forbidding anyone to pray to any god or man except you for the next thirty days? And anyone caught doing it would be thrown into the lions' den?"

"Absolutely," said the king. "Written in stone, like all the laws of the Medes and Persians."

Then they said, "Daniel, one of the Jewish exiles, ignores you, O king, and defies your decree. Three times a day he prays."

At this, the king was very upset and tried his best to get Daniel out of the fix he'd put him in. He worked at it the whole day long.

But then the conspirators were back: "Remember, O king, it's the law of the Medes and Persians that the king's decree can never be changed."

The king caved in and ordered Daniel brought and thrown into the lions' den. But he said to Daniel, "Your God, to whom you are so loyal, is going to get you out of this."

A stone slab was placed over the opening of the den. The king sealed the cover with his signet ring and the signet rings of all his nobles, fixing Daniel's fate.
The king then went back to his palace. He refused supper. He couldn't sleep. He spent the night fasting.

You see, even though the king wanted to save Daniel, in the end, there was nothing he could do. Thank God we do not place our faith in man, but rather we place our faith in God and God alone. God will never fail us or disappoint us:

At daybreak the king got up and hurried to the lions' den. As he approached the den, he called out anxiously, "Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve so loyally, saved you from the lions?"

"O king, live forever!" said Daniel. "My God sent his angel, who closed the mouths of the lions so that they would not hurt me. I've been found innocent before God and also before you, O king. I've done nothing to harm you."

Sometimes we read the bible without realizing the impact of the statements being made. Let’s take a closer look. Firstly, the very fact that the king would even call out to Daniel asking if he’s alive displays enormous faith. In those times, they would often starve the lions before tossing someone in, and the victim would be dead before he even hit the ground. Secondly, look at Daniel’s response to the king: “O king, live forever!” Isn’t that astounding? When we put our faith in God to deliver us, all we can do to the people who have let us down is just stand and bless them. There weren’t any grudges, any hard feelings, not one exchange of harsh words. Daniel simply praised God and blessed the king!

When the king heard these words, he was happy. He ordered Daniel taken up out of the den. When he was hauled up, there wasn't a scratch on him. He had trusted his God.

Then the king commanded that the conspirators who had informed on Daniel be thrown into the lions' den, along with their wives and children. Before they hit the floor, the lions had them in their jaws, tearing them to pieces.

King Darius published this proclamation to every race, color, and creed on earth:

Peace to you! Abundant peace! I decree that Daniel's God shall be worshiped and feared in all parts of my kingdom. He is the living God, world without end. His kingdom never falls. His rule continues eternally. He is a savior and rescuer. He performs astonishing miracles in heaven and on earth. He saved Daniel from the power of the lions.

From then on, Daniel was treated well during the reign of Darius, and also in the following reign of Cyrus the Persian.

Don’t you just love that!? Because Daniel did not compromise in his worship and relationship with God, God preserved his life; his enemies were completely eradicated; the king recognized and gave glory to the one true God; and Daniel was well taken care of the rest of his days.

You absolutely cannot lose when you put your faith and complete trust in God. Faith will not only give Almighty God pure pleasure, but it will also make a spectacle of our enemies and influence the hearts of kings in the process. What an awesome God we serve!

Why Is Faith Important? (Part One)

What could possibly cause an all-knowing, all-powerful, and ever present God to react in pure delight? Can anything excite God or give Him pleasure?

Quite simply, YES! Hebrews 11:6 states: “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who diligently seek him.”

Throughout His life on Earth, Jesus encountered all sorts of people—Pharisees, Sadducees, widows, children, rich men, poor men, fisherman, tax collectors, among many others. But whom did He ever praise or compliment? What kind of person made an impression on Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords?

Was it the person who knew every letter of the law or the person who committed the fewest sins? Not by a long-shot! Jesus wasn’t moved by a person’s high status or seemingly “spotless” record. He was moved by ordinary people with extraordinary faith. Let’s take a look at a case in point—the Canaanite woman with a demon-possessed daughter in Matthew 15:21-28:

Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”

Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”

He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”

The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.

He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

“Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Isn’t Jesus wonderful? At first glance, one might think Jesus was being unresponsive or even rude to this lady. But He wasn’t. He was drawing out her faith like water from a well, and giving her the chance to show the world what was already in her heart.

This woman knew who Jesus was. She knew that He could heal her daughter in an instant regardless of her family blood line. Faith does not exist in this earthly realm. It is not constricted by the limitations of the natural laws of reason. It goes way beyond our understanding. If we could figure everything out, why would we even need to exercise faith in God?

I think that’s why God is moved by our faith in Him. When we come to the end of ourselves and come to Him in total faith no matter what the circumstances look like even when it seems like God is not responding to us, He loves it. When we exercise our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are receiving the rich and glorious inheritance for which He paid dearly for us to freely enjoy.

It cost God everything to give us eternal life. Jesus shed His precious blood, and we are redeemed from the curse. Let us hold fast to the faith we profess, and draw ever closer to God, our loving Father.

Your Grace Is Greater

God’s word proves true every time. I love the way the Message version puts it in Romans 5:20-21:

“All that passing laws against sin did was produce more lawbreakers. But sin didn't, and doesn't, have a chance in competition with the aggressive forgiveness we call grace. When it's sin versus grace, grace wins hands down. All sin can do is threaten us with death, and that's the end of it. Grace, because God is putting everything together again through the Messiah, invites us into life—a life that goes on and on and on, world without end.”

Did you get that? Sin doesn’t stand a chance against God’s super-abounding, unmerited, death-defying, life-giving, amazing Grace! If sin can’t compete with Grace, why do we give it so much power in our lives?

We’ve all experienced that vicious cycle—try to be holy, get tired and give into sin, feel guilty and condemned, then try, try, try again doomed to repeat the same old thing. Thank God for the Cross and what Jesus Christ of Nazareth accomplished over 2,000 years ago!

Because Jesus took all of our sin and shortcomings on the cross, God’s judgment is completely satisfied and we have right standing with God, completely free to experience intimacy with our loving Father.

The Bible says that we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). Conversely, Isaiah 61:10 states “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul will exult in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.”

When we come to the realization that we will never meet God’s holy standard and freely accept the perfect righteousness that Christ has won for us, we break that horrible cycle of trying to achieve holiness with self-effort.
If self-righteousness is like a filthy rag to God and Christ’s perfect righteousness is like a beautiful, dazzling white robe, I’m going with Christ’s righteousness. That’s a no-brainer right?

For those of us who know we’ve missed the mark, this is amazing news! God made Him who knew no sin to become sin for us, so that in Him, we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). Here’s the best part, we can finally stop trying to be perfect! God knew that we could never save ourselves, and that’s why He sent Jesus.

Grace will beat sin every time. No matter what you’ve done, whether you’ve committed homicide or stolen a cookie from the cookie jar, God’s Grace is greater still. So the next time you miss the mark (and we probably will considering we are still a work-in-progress), rest assured you can come Boldly to the Throne of Grace and freely receive forgiveness. As we yield to the Holy Spirit and continue in our relationship with Him, it is God who produces in us the desires and actions that please Him (Philippians 2:13).

The Richness of His Word

What a sweet and pleasing aroma that comes from the richness of Your Word. How it perfumes my mind with such splendor

How it emanates with the power to hold the universe in place

How it washes over me like a mighty gushing river

How it shines brighter than a thousand suns and ten thousand moons

How it reaches deep into my soul cutting away the evil desires of my flesh

How it accelerates growth in my spirit and breaks stubborn patterns of destructive behavior

What a powerful weapon, the Incorruptible Seed of Your Word

Logo Logic

Logos are a quick and easy way for people to identify a brand or company and should ideally capture a tidbit of what the company represents. Like they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Even if a company’s logo is simply an abbreviation or spelling out of its name, a lot can be construed from the choice of the font, style, and coloring.

Let’s take a look at Google, for example. What does google even mean? Apparently, the word “google” was modeled after a mathematical term “googol” which is basically the number 1 followed by 100 zeroes. I can definitely see the connection, given the plethora of o’s that are squeezed between this famous company name.

Google’s logo is essentially six simple letters in hues of blue, red, yellow, and green. At first glance, it doesn’t seem like much, but it surprisingly conveys a lot. The colors, for one, are reminiscent of a certain software operating system commonly known as Microsoft Windows. When I see those familiar colors, already, I think of computers and technology. Also, the different colors communicate variety, diversity, and a world of possibilities. The style of the Google’s lettering is fun and not too busy which allows for a pleasant browsing experience. The simplicity also translates into instant recognition. When it comes to logos, among many other things, less is definitely more.

Keeping this in mind, I decided to get my feet wet in the logo-making biz and take a shot at making a logo for my friend’s mom’s homemade jelly company, Fat Frog. The only stipulation my friend gave me for the logo was that she wanted a frog, so I had a fair amount of freedom in taking this project wherever I wanted it to go.

Firstly, I had to think about the context of this logo and what it is supposed to represent. Jelly is something I consider fun, happy, silly, and messy. And with a name like Fat Frog, I immediately picture a cute, chubby little frog with a big smile on its face! Once I decided the overall effect the logo should have (i.e. happy, fun, and bubbly), the rest was a piece of cake.

The logo is super-simple—big puffy green letters with an even more puffy-faced frog in the middle. It is still a work-in-progress and subject to change due to any requests/alterations the client may have. Without any further ado, I give you my version of the Fat Frog logo!

The Sweet Smell of Success

After less than a week of trying to get this blog to appear on the first page of Google search results, success! According to Aisha is now the 8th link on the first page when you type my name into Google. Not bad, considering it did not appear at all within the first 30 pages of search results only last week!

So what did I do?

--Submitted the URL to Google which helped the website to get indexed
--Changed the title of the blog to include my first name which increased the page's relevance to my key words and is quite catchy!
--Included my key words (i.e. my first and last name) at the bottom of the last post

A more detailed account of what you can do to improve your website's visibility with online search engines can be found in Google's webmaster guidelines, http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769

Truly, the best thing to do is to focus on the needs of your users and include rich information that will benefit them, first and foremost. If you do that, coupled with following a few design and technical guidelines, then SEO is a piece of cake!

Good luck to all the Search Engine Optimizers out there!

SEO in Action!

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a form of marketing used by businesses and organizations to gain a higher visibility in the search results generated from online search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

For my purposes, I would like this blog to appear on the first page of the search results upon typing my first and last name into Yahoo, Google, and Bing.
Right now, the top results are my Facebook and LinkedIn profiles. The blog, however, is nowhere to be found amongst the first 30 pages of search results on Google. That’s right, 30 pages (possibly more if I kept on going). Looks like I have my work cut out for me.

I’ll start by submitting my blog’s URL to the search engines and shamelessly plugging in my key words at the bottom of this post! There will also be periodic updates to track my progress.

Let the Search Engine Optimization begin!

A Foldable Bike: Quirky, Yet Functional New Product on My WishList

With a suggestion from a friend and in my attempt to be fit, I decided to make biking a new hobby. After fixing up my little brother’s rusty old bike that we all forgot about behind the garage, my bike-riding adventure began. One problem: How was I going to transport this bike to a nice park nearly 15 miles away?

Thankfully, the helpful friend who gave me the idea to pick up biking had a bike rack for two attached to the back of her car. It was here that another problem arose. After about an hour of getting our fingers pinched and using all of our strength to lift up those heavy bikes again and again to get them in a secure position, I was completely worn out. I was already breaking out into a sweat and we had not even left my driveway!

Finally, by nothing short of a miracle, we got them on and were off to the Houston Memorial Park!

Once we got to the park and as my bike-riding skills were slowly returning from my childhood, we had a blast. For anyone that is looking for a fun and easy way to exercise and burn some calories, this is the best thing to do!

As much fun as it was, I haven’t gone back to the park for one main reason: the hassle of getting those bikes on the rack! It got me thinking, “Somebody should really invent a foldable bike that will fit in the trunk!”

One Google search click later, I come to find out foldable bikes already exist in a variety of brands and styles. Looks like I’m not the only one who thinks bike racks are a source of needless frustration!

Foldable bikes are chainless, which minimizes the need for repairs, and fold in half for easy transport in planes, trains, RV's, boats, and automobiles. The only downside for me right now is the price which is upwards of $700. While I’ll probably be limited to riding around the neighborhood on my non-foldable bike for now, the foldable bike is at the top of my wish list of products!
